What Is Vinyl Sheet Piling?

Apr 23,2023

Vinyl sheet piling is an earth retaining structure component that can be used for temporary and permanent applications. It is usually found in building and infrastructure projects, including construction of piers and oil terminals, waste storage facilities, bridges, houses, buildings, etc.
It is manufactured from a modified polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin compound and can be extruded into varying cross sections for a variety of retaining wall applications, especially sea walls or bulkheads. Its durability, low cost and ease of use make it a popular choice for homeowners and businesses with oceanfront or lakefront property.

The design of a sheet pile wall depends on a variety of factors, including the design loads applied to the structure and the subsurface materials at the site. Engineers also need to consider environmental exposure of the structure, as well as project budgets.
Unlike steel, vinyl sheet piles are not affected by salt water corrosion and they are resistant to agents of rusting such as acids and alkalis that affect timber piles. They also resist marine borers that chew up timber structures and deteriorate their structural integrity.
They are less expensive and lightweight compared to steel sheet piles. They are easy to transport and install.
Driving of vinyl sheet piles is most often done using a compact vibrohammer or an excavator. Under certain conditions, a protective steel cap or mandrel may be utilised to protect the pile head and increase more even distribution on the end of the sheet pile of the driving load.
