Advantages of Vinyl Sheet Piles

Mar 10,2023

Vinyl Sheet Piles are one of the most popular and cost-effective options available for seawalls, bulkheads, cut-wall containment barriers and other applications. Their advantages include high strength, good aesthetics and low weight, as well as long design life and corrosion resistance.
Commonly Manufactured by Continuous Extrusion

The process of creating sheet piles involves heating the raw material, a plastic resin compound, and pushing it through a die to create the desired cross-section shape. The sheets are then cut to length and interlocking male and female edges are extruded into each individual sheet to insure continuity and strength.

Typically, vinyl sheet piles are manufactured to be driven two at a time, similar to steel sheet piling. However, because the extrusion process allows a wide variety of sections, manufacturers can also incorporate stiffening elements such as ribs and thickened corners to increase section modulus and eliminate interlocking.
Selection of Driving Equipment

Choosing the proper machine for driving sheet piles requires a consideration of both soil conditions and the contractor's preference. On loose or sandy soil, rail jet and water are often the tools of choice, while on clay sites backhoe buckets, silts drop hammers, and vibratory plate compactors are more common.
Installation Methods

Installing Vinyl Sheet Pile is typically done in the same manner as wood or steel sheet piling, with the exception that a special support called a mandrel is required for long and thin piles. The mandrel supports the weight of the driving machine and adds rigidity to the sheet pile.
